My name is Sarah Bearman; I'm Dick and
Barbara's middle child and I suspect some of you
probably babysat for me. . .Glaydin was my first
home and it was a wonderful place to grow up. I
remember swimming in the Pond, climbing the tree
at the smoking circle, Cliff's speeches in the
dining hall, apple-picking, baby pigs at George
and Louise's house. . .I really like reading all
of your Glaydin memories. Glaydin was an
extraordinary community in which to begin my life.

My name is Steve Jaeger, I attended Glaydin from
1970 to 1973 and came back to teach a course in
'78. I still live in Loudoun County and have been
back to Glaydin a few times, mostly during the
fair in August. It breaks my heart to see it in
such piss poor condition. It's really falling to
rack & ruin. Anyone who wishes can contact me:

New email s.jaeger@verizon.net.
Bearman, Kimberly L-S, Riskin and I've seen

the best thing that could have happened to me at
the time. It is always close to my heart

Dear dear Glaydin. I am amazed at this. This is
Kim Lamson-Scribner, 1969-73, and last night I got
a message from Stevie Jaeger (head of Da Gang and
wonderful chef) about this page. "Be still my
heart" - a familiar phrase to some Glaydinites of
those years? I remember a slightly different
version of how the name for Glaydin came into
being:
George
Louise

I
N
I have been techno-leary for a long time and have
only this month joined the e-mail and www-world, and
so want to test that I can actually send this before
I write more. It is so great to hear of those I
know, those I don't know, the place, the people.
Glaydin was and continues to be a gift in my life.
It saved and rearranged my world - giving love,
vision, inspiration, an opening. A place of learning
about trust, truer freedoms, and direction. Reading
these pages feels like coming home. This is Great.
Thank you to whoever is reconnecting us. I love mystery
left as mystery, too, and yet...mlarch couldn't be
some version of Meadowlark could it?

This is Kim L-S again (long ago aka Timberlake,
Torpedo II - Shelly Jennings was Torpedo I, and
Lambchop). Getting more adept at this computer
business step-by-step, much inspired by this site!

My interview at Glaydin was on a Wednesday,
which in the 1969-70 school year was the day
everyone went to the rollerskating rink. With
rollerskating being part of my interview, running
into Tweedie who I had known from the past, and an
illicit trip to the woods, my superficial 14-year
old judgment thought Glaydin was just fine. It
was also the only school in a 3 state area that
seemed willing to take me. I liked Glaydin from
the start. Certainly better than running, the
streets (though they were a somewhat safer in the
crash-pad, runaway house, 60's-type days, than
they are now), and inconsistent eating. Jane told
me at the interview that I would be accepted on
probation, and see how it would work out. It was
comfortable at first and grew on me. If I had
known what was really happening I probably
wouldn't have been able to accept it. What was
truly happening was that I was learning I could be
loved, how to love, inspiration to learn, respect
and care for others, human among humans, and to
believe in myself and others, worth and a bigger
view in which I could be a part of, and to be free
in a truer way, to enjoy life. Respect and love
(eventually) taught respect and love. Or this is
how I can describe it in hindsight. In outside
revolution times in this country, Glaydin brought
about a revolution in my being that just creeped
into me, not conscious but deep. Over time, I've
been grateful and reflect back, and have felt a
deep bond to it, but it's been sort of abstract
the last few years. Right now, with this web
site, I am catapulted into my roots feeling more
real, more tangible, and it just fills me up!

Some memories:

Ken Leber (who had come from Hawaii) taking his
surfboard out to paddle around the lake, taking
us on tandem-paddles. Riding across the lake on a
t-bar on a rope and dropping off in the deep end.
Skinny dipping at night (and other times?).

Ibby Acosta walking around campus singing with her
finger in one ear to hear if she was on-key.

Guitar playing everywhere. Shelly Jennings with
"Won't It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue" and "Wild
Horses." All the folk music, beautiful rock
music. All the time.

Shelly Jennings tooling around on her unicycle in
Clare's dorm.

Monday morning meetings in the Old Lodge, for
announcements and if anyone had anything they
wanted to say, but often just sitting in a
gathered group, silently being together for a
while.

Mona making bacon for breakfast and learning it
was Belinda, George and Louise's pig.

George pretending he didn't know that my dog Angel
was in the laundry sack I was carrying when I'd
get on or off the bus for weekends away. George
always solid and kind and warm.

Agnes Sailor's maniac driving, a quirk aspect to
the rest of her nature.
Her quietly lived passions of Glaydin, gardening,
being taken off phone bill taxation as a
conscientous objector to the war, steady
practicality, and watching/seeing.

Jane, always with a higher view and higher form of
care, and, "Now, looook...." "The only thing that
never changes is change itself."

Going on the first earth day to the Blue Ridge
mountains. Going in to Washington during a march.

Jimmy Minor and H.P. Lovecraft.

Da Gang. Stevie making a pizza at Bob Dowell's
and getting creative adding toppings - an early
chef deal.

Outside classes. Afternoon trips.

Capture the Flag. Dick's class building a
long house in the woods.

Going up to the lean to, past the lake and spring
house, through the cabins, further into the woods.

Phil Strang and Pinto, the horse.

Books and encouragement without pressure to think
and/or relate - "The Art of Loving," "Tally's
Corner," "A Separate Peace," "Sir Gawain and the
Green Knight" - yow!, "Look Homeward, Angel,"
Bruno Bettleheim.

All the dogs, cats, horses, pigs, monkeys, snakes,
music and motorcycles.

Clare waking up the girl's dorm with music.

Sheila Frisby's girls dorm going on a group streak
through campus (without Sheila knowing until
afterwards).

The skirmishes, and faculty seeing beyond the
behavior, taking care of business but often giving
the benefit of the doubt.

Boo (aka Rick Honn, Young Lion) sucking raw eggs
out of egg shells before art class. His passion,
his dog Yoni. Ilsa Pinkston, her sweetness,
assisting in class.

Michael Riskin, in all aspects, with his MG, VW
van, music, books, gentleness. And Clancy, the
dog.

Sneaking to the boy's dorm in the wee hours -
playing blackjack, tequila with lemon and salt.

"That's just the way it's gotta be" Kevin.

Silent and thin Leonard gently squatting, forever
drawing dinosaurs.

Feeling free and just being.

Choo Choo.

"Ring the bells that still can ring,
Forget your perfect offering,
There's a crack in everything,
That's how the light gets in." - Leonard Cohen

Glaydin was the light that got in.

Hey everyone -

It's Doug Lindsay. I attended Glaydin Camps from
1968-72 and school from 1970-75 with my brother
Bruce. We had some of the best times of our lives
there and often think about Glaydin. Bruce is
doing well. He works for the Post Office in
Centerville Virginia and does extra work for local
movie production companies and has another life as
Porchop Hogette; one of the Washington Redskin
Cheerleaders referred to as "The Hogettes". He
has two sons named Christopher 18, and Robbie 14.
I'm also doing well and living happily ever after
in Jupiter, Florida with a wife and two great
kids, Matthew 16 and Mallory 9. I've been
employed with Golden Bear (Jack Nicklaus) for five
years and enjoy my work emensely. I coordinate
Golf Schools around the country. I'm still a
weekend warrior playing music in a couple of local
party/wedding bands, and after 25 years still
enjoy it.

Please feel free to write me at mal@bellsouth.net

hope to hear from you.

Glaydin. Home. Easy to say; hard to explain.
Glaydin is the place I carry idealized in my
heart, the place where every snow storm comes with
a toboggan attached to it; where chasing kids
through secret paths in the dark woods is fun for
everyone involved, where even dreary rainy days
hold the promise of warmth. It is the place where
we all pulled together as hard as we could, each
in our own direction, to figure one thing out. Me?
I found that the broken parts of my life were
bigger than war or peace or love or organic
gardening but smaller than my fear and confusion
or the arrogance or intellect I used as smoke
screen and bandage. Of course, I didn't find it
out there. One didn't tend to be told things at
Glaydin; one tended to be led toward them. It was
only later, on reflection, that one found the
clues strung together. It was home in that way,
too: as much as it was a thing itself, it was a
chance for us to gather strength for the next
thing. And finally, it is the roots of the tree of
my true family. It is where I find my brothers and
sisters, my parents, and my children. I still
can't tell the staff from the students, or the
parents from the children, and I wouldn't have it
any other way. Love, Charlie Wilkinson 1977 -

Hello to those who might have known me in '79-'80
when I worked as a "houseparent" to a number of
interesting people who I wonder about on a regular
basis- Sam the boxer referred to earlier, Marty M,
John H., Mike H. and a number of others. Have
always had mixed feelings about being asked to
help people who often needed more than I had but
we all tried in best faith. I did go into
medicine and ended up becoming a psychiatrist and
practice here in Leesburg. Married Sarah Bothers
in 1984 and we have 2 marvelous children aged 14
and 13. I am sad to note to those who loved him
as much as much as Sarah and I did that Paul Weber
died in Florence 2 years ago. It still pains me to
think of his loss. He was such a good man.

Hello again, it's Steve Jaeger. It's before
6:00 a.m., the kids are all still asleep and I can
for once sit down and write out some Glaydin
memories without interruptions.

Living in the Boys Division while the dorm was
being built, well into November. Freezing cold
nights and mornings. Burning Ace's dresser for
fire wood ( "rape on" ). All night long
psychedelic "sessions", Jensen Kavarnes and Keith
Oshins constant arguments. Lee Miller being
expelled before the school year was even two
months old.

Rob Zunzer, "What a bit of bad luck", Cathy
Bourke, "Rob, put your clothes back on" Big Al and
Little Al, Uncle Al. Phil Rosemond's flute. Jack
off Gene and his gasoline (R.I.P.) Me & Bruce
Lindsay, the campus "radicals" painting
"Revolution Now!" on the side of the library and
finding it changed it to "Evolution Now" a few
days later.

Mona's lumpy gravy ( Mona's lumpy everything ).
Cooking classes with Barbara Bearman, the
inspiration for my career. Epic Cartography with
Dickie & Shelley. Tweedie wearing a little kid's
hat, hanging out the bus window as we drove
through Bethesda yelling, " Help me, they won't
let me out! " and Marty Kanarak yelling at
Tweedie, " Stop it! This is my neighborhood!"
School field trips to anti war rallies. Glaydin in
Russia where Brucie got locked up in a hospital
and nobody could find him.

Summers with Sudsie, Reggie and Roberta. Boo Boo
and the Blue Grass festival in Ivydale, W.V. The
smoking circle being so crowded you could barely
move. Hazel & Muffin, Claire & Puply, Richard &
Dino. Kenny Goldstein's cream colored motorcycle.
Marty & Frances' wedding. Ken Leber canceling
class so he could ride his motorcycle. Riskin
calling everyone a "gaper". Denise Overton's three
legged dog. Rocky Rococo.

Kevin Milam, Katie Flanders , Cello, Phil "Pinto
Burgers" Strang. Choo Choo & Vickie, Kevin Hall,
Doug Sieg, all three Cruz brothers. Gee Gee , Big
Jon, Crazy Carl & Flash

This web sight has brought back such a flood
of great memories I barely have enough time in the
day for them all. Keep them coming everyone.
Peace & Glaydin. SJ

I have had a couple of people ask me about what
happened with Paul Weber so I thought I would put
this note in for all to read.

Paul moved to Italy, Florence specifically, in
about 1980 or so. He loved his experience there as
a young(er) man and seemed intent on making it
home. He did it with gusto and never seemed to
look back. As any of you who knew Paul might guess
he traveled over Italy for some time-often at the
whim of whatever person and/or opportunity arose.
He mostly taught ESL and then got into some free-
lance writing and even did a local news broadcast
gig. He seemed to be looking to settle as he had
bought a small apartment in Florence. A friend of
mine referred to him as the unofficial mayor of
Florence-seemed to know most everybody and knew
all the interesting people of most persuasions.

He was most recently commuting to Rome doing a job
with the UN studying agriculture. He was actively
trying to nail a gig in Iraq where they would
study local agriculture for 3-6 months. He last
told me he was planning to eventually move to
Spain as he said this was where the most beautiful
women in the world live.(Perhaps Ellen Waller
would agree...). I had the chance to see him
during a cycling trip to Italy to see the Giro
d'Italia. He died on the night of his 40th
birthday after a night of great celebration with
his current girlfriend and assorted friends. He
had an attack of asthma that didn't clear, then
worsened to the point he lost his airway. He was
declared brain dead and donated 3 organs to
others.

Paul had become a Buddhist(I have a great video of
him chanting in our house while my 5 y/o tries to
figure out exactly what the hell this guy is all
about). His brother told me that hundreds of
people showed up for his funeral(or whatever
Buddhists do) in both Florence as well as Rome. I
used to kid him that he was a Jew from NYC that
moved to the most Catholic country in the world
and then became a Buddhist.

It seemed that Paul was developing an integrated
sense of self after so many years of searching. It
remains the saddest loss of my life. He was loved
deeply by those that he touched.

Very beautiful.

I've just spent at least an hour going through all
of these writings. How fun to read and "remember
when". I went to Glaydin in the late 70's and
graduated from there. I saw quite a few names
that brought back some memories. I am
particularly interested in finding some friends
that I lost touch with after moving from Virginia
to California about 20 years ago. If anybody
knows where to reach Johnny Sasso or Lowell
Marshal, I would be indebted to them.

My first night at Glaydin is one of my most
favorite memories. I was placed in Kiki dorm. I
was bunking with a girl named Gail. I was sitting
in my room when Johnny knocked on the door and
asked me if I wanted to see something cool. Of
course, I was skeptical but decided to go anyway.
He brought me to his room and pointed to his
closet where Johnny and Lowell had dug a hole big
enough to fit about 6 people under their room.
I'll never forget that night. I also have
wonderful memories of the woods and the lake and
special people. It is so exciting to me to have
found this site and to read everyone else
memories. I also remember Joel, and Brian (those
two always seem to be together to me) and Sam and
Dean and Cheesy.

It would be fantastic to find these people and be
in touch with them once again. Happy and Rita are
another wonderful memory and the "Mystery Band".
I remember being taken by bus to destination
"unknown" the night before graduation to a hall
out somewhere where the Mystery Band was
performing just for us. What a wonderful night.
Thanks for all the memories.

It is always this time of year that the pulls of
Glaydin are, for me, the strongest. That's
because I spent eight summers at Glaydin Camp and
even though more than thirty years have passed, I
still remember how it felt to be part of a Glaydin
summer. I close my eyes and all the feelings come
rushing in. Simply put, I grew up at Glaydin and
that experience is my most valuable possession. I
am one of the most fortunate people on the globe
because Glaydin will always be part of me.

If I started writing about my memories of Glaydin
I could fill a book. Funny thing is I remember
more about Glaydin than any other part of my life.

I am finally getting my act together and plan to
be an art therapist and work with kids. I do art
with the neighborhood kids and love it. I also
find psychology really fascinating. Yes I still
write poetry and do artwork. One day I will finish
school One day a will finish school........... I
work at the Library at school.

I would love to hear from the Prillamins,
Bearmans, Alice, Marlene, Mona, Lynne Margeret,
etc..... etc.......etc.....

I think a reunion would be alot of fun and we
could give back to a wonderful place that gave so
much to us.
