Glaydin ?

What does glaydin mean to you, and I don't mean the housing development? I'd like to know. Whatever you write in context I'll post here . (In other words, don't include your phone number unless you are interested in umpteen million people knowing it). If you feel compelled to use expletives, please include asterisks where appropriate (to please the net nannies).

Just Click Here to email me your thoughts, put GLAYDIN in the subject line, and they will be posted below.

My name is Harold Kanarek and I am
stunned to see that there is a Glaydin Home
Page. I attended Glaydin in Lucketts, Va.
for the summers of 1960 through 1967. Those
8 weeks each summer were glorious days.
First, it was the 1960s and then it was a
place where each individual was accepted
for whoever he or she was. It was
George, Louise, Agnes, Charlie, Jim and
more. Those were carefree days that totally
shaped my life. Actually it is not just
nostalgia for I knew during those fabulous
summers that this was it. I loved everything
about the place, the politics, the activities,
and the friendships. Each summer was like a
lifetime. I would love to know who put this
page up.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Peggy (O'Neill) Sligh. I went to Glaydin
in the early 70's. I'd have to stop & think exactly
which year, no time for that now. My one year at
Glaydin was UNFORGETTABLE. It can only be
described as a place to heal your soul and that's
just the place itself! The people I knew students
and staff alike will always hold a special place in
my heart. I'd love to hear from anyone who has
shared this unique experience.

There were some good times to be had, and I fondly

Hey glaydin people;

Keith Oshins again, asking any and all to write
to me in this space, or at my new address: 193
Craven Street, Vallejo, CA 94590. I'm an old fashioned
kinda guy, and I don't need (nor got)no stinking

Questions:
Is the "Dick" referred to by anonymous Dick
Berman, former dorm meister?

Is Harold Kanarek related to Marty Kanarek, who
taught in 1970 - 71 and moved to Berkeley with
Rose, a student?

Did Peggy O'Neill live in the old dorms(nearest
the road) in 1971, roommate to the younger one of
a pair of sisters?

Has any one any memories or information about:

Claire Arce(sp?), the mistress of the "new"
girls dorm in 1971; Kevin Milam; Rich Turen,
teacher and founder of Glaydin Abroad, Ken and
Karen the biology teachers; "Da Lady" Jane
Wilhelm; Ibby Acosta; Kimberly Lansom-Scribner;
Alan Levy; Alan Marcuse; Jim Tweedy; Deborah
Underwood; Jimmy Minor; John "Ace" Brittain; and
others I shall doubtless recall later?

Why do I remember these people and not the name
of the lovely lady I was waltzing with last night?

Love and nostalgia,
K.L.O.

Hi, I stumbled across this page the day after
Xmas, 1998. With only about ten postings in a
year and a half it feels a little like putting
a message in a bottle to respond, but it would
be great to hear from any other Glaydinites if
you are so inclined. I was at Glaydin for several
summers in the 60's. I remember the folks from
Glaydin Camp who have posted here and most of
the Glaydin School people who have been mentioned
(at least by reputation). I believe I still have
the mailing list somewhere that Reg Marshall
created for the reunion about ten years ago, so
I could provide (old) addresses for anyone who
responded to Reg back then.

I have a slightly different take on what those
summers meant than Harold Kanarek. (Hi Harold!).
He wrote that he knew during those summers that
"this was it". I can't say the same. It was not
until many years later that I truly appreciated
what a unique place Glaydin was. I'll always be
grateful to the people I met there and the
experiences we had. I have no doubt whatsoever
that I would be a very different person today
if Glaydin hadn't "expanded" my world. My name
is Matt Sylvester (30 years ago you would
have called me "Sudsy")

We just had a group of 50 from a church in New York this past week who
helped with everything from roofing to landscaping. They are returning
to help again in about 3 weeks.

Maybe you could get a group together for a Glaydin Reunion and a little
help at the same time. Glaydin is a wonderful place and I hate to see it
just die. At the present time, I am the only person here to provide repair
services for the camp and I do this at no charge.
Thanks for your concern about Glaydin

Hello all,

I graduated with Kirk Tefft in the Class of '79 (one of eleven).
Keith, I can answer your question about two of the people you
inquired about at least up to '79. Claire was still teaching
English and was visited occaisionally by her daughter Star who
was either in college or recently graduated and kept two dogs,
Yonei and Pupply. Still a wonderful teacher. Al Marcuse returned
as a teacher and ran the younger (read "wilder") boys dorm and
taught classes as well. His dorm was the one on the right as you
looked at Claire's cottage. Agnes Sailor passed away in '79 and
was greatly missed as all of you can imagine. I didn't know an
Ibby Acosta but Happy and Rita Acosta were there in '79 and ran
my dorm for half a year. I "roadied" on a couple of gigs for him
with Jay Higginbotham. I'm not very good at articulating my
feelings so I will say this: They say that people who live in
the past are doomed to repeat it. I would be more than willing
to take that chance to spend another two years at Glaydin.
I miss you all.

Kirk, In my giddy departure from my first message I forgot to tell
you what happened to Mike Riskin. Shortly after graduating
from Glaydin I joined the Navy and eventually met a fellow in
'84 who knew Mike. This guy was at one time a psychologist
for Loudon County Mental Health. He told me that Mike left
Glaydin the same year we did and went to work for L.C.M.H.
and eventually rose to the title of Director of L.C.M.H. . You
may remember his girlfriend Lucia Watson. She is the owner of
an upscale restaurant in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area named
"Lucia's" and is an occaisional recipe contributor to the "In
Fisherman" magazine (which is how I found her). I know this
is not a message board but I thought some other people out
there might be interested to know what became of these two as
well. Hope you are well and think of you from time to time.

As for the anonymous poster above: I would like to know
the names of the people that are posting on this site. I have
lost contact with everybody that attended Glaydin and just to
hear a voice from amongst my old friends makes me feel good.
Good to know they are alive and good to know they care enough
to post. I'm sorry you had to be shamed into sending your
message.

Do you -- or anyone -- have access to any kind of mailing list
for Glaydin alumni? Seems like the best way to get Ren and Glaydin
some help would be to do it as a group. Perhaps we could arrange an
alumni weekend?
from:
ahcheevers@aol.com

Maintainer's note
What I can do is forward all messages that come to
me about Glaydin to everyone on the list -- that's
easy while the list is as small as it is. It wont be
in real time of course, but lag time should be less
than 2 days at the most, more likely only a few hours.
Is everyone/anyone up for that, getting cc'd on all
Glaydin messages? I would create a sub-Glaydin webpage
for topic specific messages because obviously it is
important to archive all of what gets said. I'll need
feed back on this. Like "No! don't cc me", or, "Sure,
fine, whatever", or, "Just dump it all at the Glaydin
page and buzz us when anything shows up". Silence is
a vote too, means you don't care one way or the other.
Or maybe someone is eager to become an list moderator
(I'd still like there to be an archive) ?
If I don't hear anything back I'll leave well enough alone.

It was getting stoned in the woods by the pond down from the lodge.
It was getting cought naked with Wally Pfieffer by almost every teacher at least once
It was Dick Bearman waking me up to just how much damage a teenager can do
It was talking with Agnus about medicinal herb
It was learning how to be a human
It was the first stable environment I ever had

Hello Fellow Glaydinated Wanderers,
This is Eve Birch and I went Glaydin in the late 70s
sometime - pretty foggy world back then. My heart
went flippety flop when I found out about this site!
I feel I'm close with everyone who ever went there
because you know those woods where I woke up as a
human - though the poor souls I burnt out in the
process might think I wasn't worth the pain I
caused. Maybe I was and maybe I wasn't - I know
I'm glad I'm alive and Glaydin is fairly responsible
for that - I know in my heart that the life I'd have
led without Glaydin would've had a grizzly end
somewhere loveless and cold.

As it was, I went to that place and stayed for awhile.
But when I saw people dropping like flies around me
I had that life force that kicked in and told me to
live! That there are other Glaydins out there waiting
for me. Places where the love music and the smiles
can lift one out of any funk.

So thanks and please forgive me, you know who you
are as I do, I've carried what I took from you and
put it to good use. I am the founder and ceo of
Blue Flame of The Ozarks, Inc; a public benefit
corporation (non profit). We are teaching poor
neighborhoods how to become communities - food
co-ops and bartering for services (car repairs, fuel
vouchers, etc). The organization is just gettin' its
pinfeathers but it's growing well.

And if that ain't enough to soften your memories of
me how about this - I have a fifteen year old with
green hair who's lobbying hard to get all her parts
pierced who got so bad at one point I had to quit my
job for 2 years so I could home school her because no
school would take her. Feel better?

I learned to hold my child close when things get hot.
To love those who feel unlovable. I learned it from
Mike and Jean, and Lynne and Charlie, and Clare, and
Dick, and Mike Riskin and Sweet Dove and Boo and others
who simply addressed me as a human when we ran into
each other. I learned how to clear woods.

Whew, I got it out. Thanks, guys.

Glaydin from 1966 to 1970. Though Glaydin was a
mess accademically, it helped me out of my shell.
Michael Riskin showed me I could be somebody. Rick
Hahn showed me art. Agnes showed me how to love
selflessly. George Baker showed me how to ride (He
put me on "Snookums" bareback slapped his butt and
off I went!) Rich Turen (Turkenitz was his hidden
real name!) showed me not to listen to all my
teachers, mainly him! Peter Benchley show me yoga
which changed my life. And Jane Wilhelm showed me
how to relax!

My brother George Heiner taught there in the mid
seventies, but I was gone and off studying to be
a dancer and an actor which is what I have done
mostly for a living for 29 years now. I too would

Rick Hahn, Richard Turen, Michael Riskin, and all at

place I ever experienced compassion, hope and love. And
boy was I a challenge.. from the time we snuck out and
stole the horses, sorry George! To the time Mika tried to
wake me up with a bucket of ice cold water... Dick Bermen
having endless patience with me. I lived in the only 4

Hi guys,
I have been lurking some. After reading Eve's
hilarious poem about being caught naked numerous
times, how could I resist!!! heehee It brought
back fun memories and litterally made me laugh out
loud.

Glaydin was so much fun and I really liked everyone
so much. It is such a blast to have this site to
post. I graduated in 1979. Hi Sid, Eve and Kirk. I
recognize your names from the list.

Glaydin really helped me get get reaquainted with the
world. I have grown to become the happy middle class
house wife, mother of three and sometimes laugh at
how "normal" it is. Life is very good to me. Married
14 years and live in Ohio. I feel content and very
comfortable.

I loved hearing Eve say that she holds her daughter
close when things get tough. That is what Glaydin
means to me....

It is wonderful to hear stories from you guys of
starting your own companies and being ceo's! Wow.
Glaydin sure made dreams come true.

Living in Ohio makes it awfully difficult to make it
to any restoring Glaydin get together, but if anything
gets planned, I sure would like to know about it. We
go to Va. beach every summer. I have gone back and
seen the Glaydin campus. It is still beautiful. Someone
moves the grass and plants flowers. It is just like
before except with a street sign, paved road and the
dorms have all removed the lofts. Ahhhhhh, what fun
we used to have in the lofts. :)

Look forward to hearing from more Glaydin alum.

Er, my name was Star, and I've been watching this board for over
a year... sort of waiting to see if anyone I knew well managed
to find themselves here. I'm still in touch with a number of
Glaydin people, most of them too shy or strange to post here.

But to correct a few distortions: Al Darby, I am not Clare's
daughter, though we were very close. And I did not have two dogs.
Puppiky belonged to Clare, and Yoni (Puppily's mother) belonged
to Boo Boo-- or Rick Honn. I hung around Glaydin after graduating
in 1976 because I worked in Leesburg, first as a waitress at the
Red Horse Inn, and then at a daycare center. I did a brief stint
of working in the Glaydin kitchen in the evenings. I also lived
with Boo for a year-- I think that was 1979.

Quick bits of gossip: Boo is married, teaching in DC, and has a
little boy; Dick Bearman lives in Eastern Maryland, runs an adult
mental health facility, and has gone 'boaty'; Barbara lives not
too far from Leesburg; the three Bearman kids (my neices and
nephews) all grew up to be incredible and interesting people; I
married Dick Bearman's younger brother, had three kids-- we
separated about 3 and a half years ago; Clare is in Northern VA,
still; last I saw Grant and Lew was at Jessica Bearman's wedding;
I saw Jane Wilhelm about three years ago-- she was frail, but as
wonderful as ever; Kenny Goldstein lives in DC, has a young
daughter, and has taken to writing; Jan, Kevin Milam, and Tom
Bolt are all still close friends of mine and prefer not to have
any details posted.

And me? Well, I'm living in New York City. I'm a hack-writer,
part-time mommy, and madly in love with a crazy limey. I'm
addicted to the Net, and I follow a number of message boards --
including this not-very-active one. Oh, and I have mixed feeling
about Glaydin. There were definitely some wonderful days there...
I made some life-long friends, and I certainly gained from the
support I got from some of the staff. But there were plenty of
holes for the lost to fall into, and there were plaenty of staff
who probably did more harm than good. But hey, it was the 70s, right?

I am so glad to have found you all here

Dick Bearman, who obviously cannot
remain anonymous given how much you all
still love him, sent it to Ken.

Glaydin to me meant learning to love. It
wasn't easy and I'm still at it today.
Nat! But working with so many of you
really launched me in that direction.
Again, thanks for the site.

nostalgic joy to read your writings.

Hey, Phil Rosemond! Bitchin' website. Loved the
poetry. Happy to hear of your succcess in the
dance field. I well remember your flute playing,
hanging out with you & Jimmy Minor, wierds among
the wierd. Thanx for reminding me about Peter's
Yoga classes. For years now I've been telling his
story of how he freaked out the draft board
doctors by playing with his heart rate, blood
pressure, etc. Thank you, Star & Sid, for info on
people of the 1970 vintage. Please give my love to
Kevin, Claire, Dick(is he the anonymous sailor),
Barbara, and any others you see. Star, tell us
where we might read some of your writings!
Thank you Peggy for writing me. I shall answer
you soon.

I have in my possession a copy of the Glaydin
Gazette, circa 1970, a photo of the very first
Glaydin Abroad crew on the way to London, and a
copy of the yearbook for 1969-70. If anyone would
like copies, please write me here.

As for myself, the following short biography
seems somewhat Glaydin-influenced. Left G. for a
brief stint at the Loomis Prep School in
Connecticut, but resigned( five minutes before
they were going to boot me) to attend a more Glay-
like continuation school in Santa Barbara, where
my father had retired to. Majored in biology(thank
you, Ken Leber) at Santa Barbara City College,
U.C. Santa Barbara and Califonia State, Hayward
before changing to Anthropology(wierd tribal
customs are second nature to the Bearman-bred).
Made a spotty, adventurous living as an
Archaeologist(indiana jones meets rich turen) for
the U.S. Forest Service, Park Service, and various
contractors in California, New Mexico, France, and
Hawaii. Interspersed all this with working-playing
at the original Rennaissance Faire in Northern
California, where I felt strangely at home as a
member of a tribe of loving, stoned, intelligent
wierdos who run around in the woods, making love
and bad jokes with each other. Gave up the
Archaeology to do somewhat steadier environmental
clean-up work(Hazardou! s Materials, oil spills).
Recently took a job working on the Napa Valley
Wine Train. Not precisely what I went to college
for, but it's local, steady, has good benes, and I
always wanted to work on a railway. Unmarried,
uncommited underpaid, essentially happy.

Good thoughts to all who read this, KEITH O.

Dear Glaydin Abroad'ers:

While none of my Glaydin Abroad colleagues has
fessed up to reading messages posted here, I'll
just bet some of them are out there.

I just got back from a two-week trip to Italy and
I made a trip to Mercatale and Fattoria
Castellvari to show them to my family. You
wouldn't recognize the place. Dark...run-
down...signs warning of dogs that will do damage
to your tires...whew!

Spoke to a townie who informed me that Signore
Colombo (the owner) passed away 12 years ago and
his kids have been fighting over Castellvari ever
since. As a result, the place is uninhabited but
IS still a functioning and fruitful fattoria.
Townspeople are apparently very upset about its
downfall.

Signore Baldi, the proprietor, has been pensioned
but is still working with the family to keep the
place running while they figure out what to do
about it. He and his wife have built a new home
in Mercatale and their kids have all grown.

You wouldn't recognize the town, either (don't ask
me why I expected to after 21 years). Very built
up...the communist bar's been made up so it looks
more touristici...the cinema's gone now...Quattro
Strade is now MUCH more than a simple
intersection...Angela's restaurant is gone.

All in all a sad and upsetting side trip with my
family who I couldn't begin to explain my
disappointment to. I wanted to show them our
incredible veranda with its spectacular view, walk
them into the fattoria for a glass of raw wine and
a rind of parmigiano to chew on, introduce them to
Signore Baldi and his expansive brood, show them
the nun's headstones in each of the fireplaces,
tell them about the incident with the bees in the
kitchen...and so much more.

Moral of the story: there's no going back or
backwards. My year at Glaydin Abroad, however,
was one of the most special and meaningful ever
and I am blessed to have had it.

Enough of this moroseness!

Keep well.
